Opener Travis Head’s brilliant 137 powered Australia to a historic sixth World Cup title with a convincing six-wicket victory over India in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Despite facing a challenging target of 241 in the final, Australia stumbled to 47-3 before Head, displaying his second century of the tournament, guided the team home with seven overs to spare.
Head’s outstanding innings, coupled with his remarkable partnership of 192 with Marnus Labuschagne (unbeaten on 58), halted India’s dominant streak of 10 consecutive unbeaten matches at the event. The left-handed batsman’s 120-ball knock, featuring 15 fours and four sixes, ended with Glenn Maxwell hitting the winning runs, triggering jubilant celebrations in the Australian camp.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the Indian team for their talent and determination throughout the World Cup despite their loss. “Dear Team India, your noteworthy performance and spirit throughout the World Cup have brought immense pride to the nation. We stand with you today and always,” he expressed.
Australia’s victory was set up by their bowlers, with Mitchell Starc (3-55) and Pat Cummins (2-34) playing pivotal roles in bowling out India for 240. Despite early setbacks, including David Warner’s early dismissal, Head’s resilience, and Labuschagne’s support thwarted the Indian attack.
Head, initially at risk of missing the World Cup due to a fractured hand, showcased his resilience with crucial performances in the tournament. His century in the final marked the seventh in a World Cup final and the third by an Australian, joining the ranks of Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist.
Labuschagne described the achievement as “unbelievable,” emphasizing the team’s exceptional performance. Warner praised the bowlers for setting the tone from the beginning, while Head, grateful for the opportunity after his injury, highlighted the team’s dedication.
Australia‘s decision to field first proved fruitful as disciplined bowling and impressive fielding restricted India’s batting efforts. Despite notable contributions from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma’s attacking 47, and Kohli’s 54, the slow, dry pitch favored the bowlers.
Cummins dismissed Kohli, the tournament’s leading batsman with 765 runs, and Head’s stunning catch off Maxwell shortened Rohit’s innings. Despite the challenging day, Rohit expressed pride in the team’s efforts, acknowledging that while the result didn’t favor them, the team fought with determination.
